So, what's so bad about public housing in Hutto?
Hutto can't support low income families- We don't have the governmental infrastructure necessary to support a low income housing population.
- The nearest grocery store is Wal-Mart in Round Rock, 8 miles away.
- Hutto has no public transportation or city Taxi service for those without automobiles.
- Our schools are already on the brink of bursting at the seams, and we need more time to recover from the explosive growth of the last several years.
- Many believe higher crime rates accompany low income housing projects
- Property values are already under high strain and may not survive the shock of this project
- Most people who moved to Hutto over the past few years moved here in part because there were no multi-family properties in the city, and that provided a certain feel to the town that would be lost if some were added now.
- Since Hutto has no governmental support for social support, there is no benefit for low income families to move so far from Austin where such services are readily available
- Public transportation is not avaialble for inexpensive travel into Austin.
- The job market in Hutto is very thin and can't support the types of jobs low income families traditionally rely on
