Help us stop the low cost housing projects planned for Hutto!

A private builder is proposing to build low income apartment complexes in the middle of Hutto, in the Hutto Town Square neighborhood.

The builder is applying for tax credits from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs Multifamily Division under the Housing Tax Credit (HTC) program. The tax credit application can be viewed here: Project 08192

Tax credits are awarded to these private builders based on a points system. In 2008, 111 different builders applied for tax credits in the state of Texas, and not all of them will be approved. The projects with the most points on April 8th get approved and the projects with the lowest number of points get denied. Points are subtracted by the housing authority if they receive letters and petitions about the project. Points are also subtracted if citizens show up at the April 8 meeting.

We have until the end of March to generate the most negative points against this project.

We need your help!  You can:

1. Write to the THDCA

Everyone willing should write a letter to:
Robbye Meyer
PO Box 13941
Austin, TX 78711-3941

The letter must include the following: Your name, address, the project ID ("08192 The Enclave Apartments"), a statement that indicates your disapproval of the project, and your signature.

We've made it a very simple process for you - simply click here to print out a sample letter, sign it and mail it. If you'd like, you can even bring it to the next group meeting and we will mail it for you!

2. Help spread the word

We will be sending volunteers door to door in the upcoming weeks to educate our neighbors about the consequences of allowing these low income housing projects to be forced on us. You can print a sample petition form here for neighbors who prefer not to sign a letter. We understand that the petition and letter carry the same weight, and we encourage everyone to fill out both the petition form and a letter.

3. Go to a meeting

The next meeting is Tuesday, March 11 at 6 PM at Carmine's, a locally owned pizza and pasta restaraunt located at 409 West Front Street in the shopping center just West of Hutto City Hall.

Brought to you by your concerned Hutto neighbors.
We are citizen volunteers and are not affiliated with any for-profit group or governmental agency.
